A mini flat iron, also known as a hair straightening iron, can create different hairstyles, not just straight hair. If you enjoy styling your tresses in a number of ways but want to invest in only one styling tool, then a mini flat iron is just what you’re looking for.

If you’ve never created other hairstyles with a mini flat iron or hesitate to use one lest it burns you, then this guide is for you.

First off, turn the iron on and let it heat up. Comb your hair and loosen all the snarls and tangles to do this styling process flawlessly. The heat from the iron could cause hair damage, so make sure to spray your locks with a thermal styling protector. The ends of our hair are older than the rest of your hair strands, so make sure they’re well-coated with the protector to prevent splitting and breaking.

Straight

Begin straightening by grabbing a bunch of hair strands about a quarter inch thick. Clamp these hair strands down and go as close to the scalp as you can. If you have frizzy hair, you need to start really close to the scalp to get rid of all signs of frizz. Be careful not to accidentally burn your scalp, though. In one fluid motion, slide the mini flat iron down your hair. Repeat the process two or three times, depending on how straight you want your hair. Repeat this entire step for your entire head of hair.

You might be more comfortable if you put your hair up using salon clips. This way, you’ll keep a bunch of hair away from the strands you’re currently straightening or curling. Start styling the hair on your nape and move upwards in sections. When you’re done styling a section of hair, you don’t have to clip it with the rest.

Curls

To create curls, repeat this step, but instead of sliding the mini flat iron, twist your wrist towards your head. Maintain this movement when gliding the iron all the way down your hair. For tighter, more elaborate curls, don’t slide the iron down right away. If you want looser waves, however, glide the flat iron quicker down your tresses.

Old-fashioned Flip Hairstyle

If you have shoulder-level hair or something slightly shorter, another style you can create is the old-fashioned flip hairstyle—the kind that went in vogue in the 60s. Follow the step for straightening your hair, but when you get to the bottom, flick your wrist upward.

Mini Flat Irons

Although a mini flat iron can handle any length of hair, it’s ideal for people with short hair or anyone looking for just a quick touch up. Mini-sized flat irons have a smaller surface and can get very close to the hair roots. They’re also good for touching up bangs and hair ends. A mini flat iron can also be tucked inside a small purse, making it good for traveling.
